Whilst there are several forms the two primary forms of system are vented and sealed systems.
The most familiar type of system is the pumped or vented system. This type of system has a feed and expansion tank in concert with a hot water cylinder. Hot water expands and in this type of system runs back to the expansion tank. If you look for the expansion tank in an existing system you will most usually find it in the attic.
A slightly newer, more present-day system that several people are choosing over a pumped or vented central heating system is a sealed system. There is no need for the water expansion tank if you prefer to have a sealed central heating system fitted. The mains water is used to supply the sealed Central Heating System. if you adopt this system you don’t need to use your loft for housing in the expansion tank thereby saving space, the whole system is sealed, its unvented, which has its benefits:
- frozen winter pipe work from copper pipes in the attic it is now eradicated
- fewer constituents require less maintenance
- less hazard of piping developing leaks
- sealed systems do not see airlocks and the absence of air shrinks the likelihood of inner corroding
Typical fluctuations of pressure can be permitted in a sealed system through a pressure vessel that holds compressed gas. This system has a valve that allows mains water to enter the system if the water pressure has dropped. An alternative valve will open if the pressure is detected as being too high.
